Date Calculator — How to Count Days, Add Days, and Plan Deadlines
At some point every person doing anything with contracts, projects, or travel runs into the same problem: you know a deadline is "30 days from signing" or "10 business days from receipt," and you need to know what date that actually is. The answer seems simple — count the days on a calendar — but the reality is that months have different lengths, weekends are not business days, and public holidays add another layer of complexity. A date calculator removes all of that friction instantly.
This tool has three modes. The Add/Subtract mode answers "what date is 30 days from today?" The Days Between mode answers "how many days are there between two dates?" The Countdown mode answers "how many days, hours, and minutes until a specific event?" Each mode works for both calendar days and business days.
How to Add Days to a Date
The most common use case is adding days to a date. You are looking at a contract that says "payment is due within 30 days of invoice." Your invoice is dated May 5. Add 30 to May 5 and you get June 4. Simple. But if the contract says "30 business days," the math changes — you have to skip Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays, and suddenly June 4 becomes late July.
To use the Add/Subtract tab: enter your start date, enter the number of days (positive to add, negative to subtract), and read the result. Enable "Business days only" to skip weekends. Enable "Also skip US federal holidays" to produce a result that aligns with the standard US business calendar — useful for contract deadlines, bank processing times, and HR notice periods.
A few real-world examples where adding days matters:
- Net-30 invoices. Net-30 means payment is due 30 calendar days after the invoice date. Freelancers and small business owners use this daily. Enter your invoice date, add 30, and you have the due date to put in your follow-up calendar reminder.
- Lease notice periods. Most residential leases require 30 to 60 days written notice before moving out. If you want to leave August 31, count back 60 calendar days to find your notice deadline — which lands in late June.
- Project planning sprints. If your sprint starts on a given Monday and runs for 10 business days, the calculator shows exactly which Friday it ends — accounting for any midweek holidays.
- Medical and legal waiting periods. Legal filings, medical pre-authorization, and probationary periods are often measured in business days. The calculator handles all of these without requiring you to count on your fingers.
How to Count Days Between Two Dates
The Days Between tab gives you four numbers at once: total calendar days, business days, full weeks, and the remaining days after full weeks. This multi-angle view is useful because different contexts use different units.
Calendar days count every day including weekends and holidays. This is what you want for things like "how old am I in days" or "how many days has this project been running." Business days skip weekends — they represent working days in a Monday–Friday calendar. Toggle "Exclude US federal holidays" to also skip the 11 US federal bank holidays, which is the correct count for anything involving US financial institutions, courts, or government agencies.
The week breakdown is useful for scheduling. If there are 47 days between your start date and a milestone, knowing that is 6 weeks and 5 days is more useful than just "47 days" for sprint planning.
Countdown Timer: Days, Hours, Minutes, Seconds
The Countdown tab is the most visceral of the three. It counts down to midnight of the target date with live updates every second. If the date is in the past, it shows how long ago it was.
Common uses: product launch dates, project delivery deadlines, event countdowns (conferences, weddings, trips), contract expiry dates. The countdown uses your device's local clock — no server call, no latency, no privacy concern.
One useful application is setting a countdown to a deadline you need to hold yourself accountable to. Seeing "47 days, 6 hours, 14 minutes" remaining until a grant application deadline is more motivating than looking at a date on a calendar. The seconds ticking down make the deadline feel real in a way that a calendar entry does not.
US Federal Holidays Included in Business Day Calculations
When you enable the US federal holiday exclusion, the following 11 holidays are skipped automatically for any year:
| Holiday | Date / Rule |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | January 1 |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | 3rd Monday in January |
| Presidents' Day | 3rd Monday in February |
| Memorial Day | Last Monday in May |
| Juneteenth | June 19 |
| Independence Day | July 4 |
| Labor Day | 1st Monday in September |
| Columbus Day | 2nd Monday in October |
| Veterans Day | November 11 |
| Thanksgiving Day | 4th Thursday in November |
| Christmas Day | December 25 |
These are the federal bank holidays as observed by US financial institutions and government agencies. Individual states and companies may observe additional holidays (e.g., the day after Thanksgiving, Good Friday), but the 11 federal holidays are the minimum standard business calendar for anything US-denominated.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how many days between two dates?
Use the 'Days Between' tab. Enter your start and end dates and the calculator instantly shows calendar days, business days (Monday–Friday), weeks, and remaining days. You can also toggle 'Exclude US federal holidays' to get a business-day count that skips bank holidays.
What is a business day?
A business day is any weekday — Monday through Friday — that is not a public holiday. For example, if a contract says 'payment within 5 business days' and you sign it on a Wednesday, the 5th business day is the following Wednesday (skipping the weekend). In the US, the standard business calendar also skips 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
How do I add or subtract days from a date?
Use the 'Add / Subtract' tab. Enter your start date and the number of days to add (use a negative number to subtract). The calculator shows the resulting date formatted clearly with the day of the week. Enable 'Business days only' to skip weekends when counting — useful for delivery estimates, contract deadlines, or project timelines.
How does the countdown timer work?
The Countdown tab counts down to midnight of any date you enter, updating every second to show days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining. If the date has already passed, it shows how long ago it was. The countdown uses your device's local clock — no server call is needed.
Does this date calculator handle leap years?
Yes. The calculator uses JavaScript's native Date object which correctly handles leap years, month-length differences (February 28 or 29, 30-day months vs 31-day months), and daylight saving time transitions. Adding 1 day to February 28, 2024 correctly returns February 29, 2024 because 2024 is a leap year.
